Farm To Summer School Head Teachers (Grades K-3)– Part Time, Summer
ROOTS is a non-profit dedicated to promoting food security in our community. We work with
local farmers and healthy food advocates to make fresh, nutritious food affordable and accessible to all. Our youth and adult programs focus on enhancing urban agriculture and empowered eating practices for the betterment of our food system.
Farm To Summer School Program: We partner with New Britain Schools to bring food and farming education into the summer school classroom. We serve 120 elementary school students and 34 middle school students attending the summer school session.
Job Description: ROOTS is now hiring multiple Head Teachers for positions in our Farm To Summer School Program. Head Teachers work with students in grades K-3 for half day programs. Head Teachers are responsible for delivering a curriculum focused on gardening, nutrition, and sustainability. Program dates are July 19- Aug 10, Monday through Friday from 12-4pm. Teachers will have access to ROOTS support staff, their school’s greenhouse or gardens, and a generous budget for program supplies. All positions are contract, non-staff.
Compensation range for Head Teachers is between $15-17/hr. Head Teachers receive
additional paid time for lesson planning and prep. All applicants must be able to pass a DCF and criminal background check.
Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree in education, environmental science, agriculture, nutrition, natural science or related field OR substitute equivalent experience in a youth educator role. All applicant must show some experience in youth development and supervision, particularly with
ages 5-8. Knowledge in gardening is not required but preferred.
