New Britain ROOTS is hiring a full-time, seasonal Mobile Market Manager.
ROOTS is a non-profit dedicated to promoting food security in our community. We work with local farmers and healthy food advocates to make fresh, nutritious food affordable and accessible to all. Our youth and adult programs focus on enhancing urban agriculture and empowered eating practices for the betterment of our food system.
New Britain ROOTS is accepting applications for a Mobile Market Manager to head up New Britain’s Mobile Farmers’ Market. This is a full-time nonexempt position, working 35-40 hours a week Monday-Friday with some Saturdays required. The anticipated start date is Monday June 25th with the markets
beginning the first week of July. The position ends November 30th.
The Mobile Market program aims to serve the food-insecure population of New Britain by collaborating with a network of sites located in areas where residents have low-access to healthy food.
Market sites include schools, senior housing, health clinics, and the downtown area of New Britain.
Eligible customers may participate in our incentive programs that help reduce the cost of fruits and vegetables being sold. The market also is a training tool for New Britain teenagers enrolled in our summer youth employment programs.
Under the direction of the Executive Director, the Market Manager will be responsible for independently driving the Mobile Market truck to the scheduled sites, setting up tables, displaying produce and interacting with customers to promote healthful eating, explain SNAP, WIC and FMNP benefits, and selling produce. In addition, the Manager is responsible for ordering from our partner
farms, data collection, and market promotion. The Manager will also be required to oversee and train our summer youth apprentices in market activities. Assistance for this program will also be provided by a market intern and a ROOTS AmeriCorps member.
Qualified applicants must have excellent interpersonal skills, facility with numbers, retail sales experience, a valid drivers’ license with an excellent driving record. Fluency in Spanish is a plus.
Knowledge of seasonal produce is helpful. Some moderately heavy lifting is required during set up and breakdown of market sites. Compensation range is $13-15/hour. Please be advised this position is contingent on grant funding. Applicants will be notified if there are any changes to the program.
