(WESTPORT) Farmer, Wakeman Town Farm (PT, year-round)

Wakeman Town Farm seeks a part-time, year round farmer.

Position:  Wakeman Town Farm Farmer

Start Date: June 15, 2019

 Pay and Schedule:  Hourly/Part-time averaging 19 hours per week with some seasonal variability

Wakeman Town Farm is a two-acre community educational demonstration farm in Westport, CT with a small menagerie of animals, including an alpaca, two sheep, two goats, a handful of ducks, rabbits and a flock of chickens.

The Farm is seeking a part-time farmer with knowledge and experience in animal husbandry to care for its animals, and basic horticultural knowledge, and/or willingness to learn, to care for its gardens with the guidance of the Farm’s Master Gardener and the assistance of seasonal part time help and volunteers.

Farmer will be responsible for the overall health and welfare of the Farm’s animals and apiary. Farmer will plan for and carry out feed orders, pasture grazing rotations, and enclosure maintenance as well as daily chores and periodic consultation with a veterinarian. Farmer will coordinate volunteers to assist with chores and will work with the Farm’s Animal Subcommittee to address animal needs and programming around the animals and apiary.

Farmer will be responsible for planning for and maintaining all gardens, vegetable beds, flowerbeds, trees and bushes on the Farm.  Farmer will plan for and carry out seed/plant/gardening supply purchases, planting schedules, garden prep and maintenance, harvesting, and composting. Farmer will also set up and take down the seasonal weekly farm stand and coordinate produce donation pick ups.  Farmer will carry out these responsibilities with the guidance of a Master Gardener and the assistance of a farm hand when needed. Farmer will also coordinate volunteers and assign/direct gardening chores to them, and will work with the Farm’s Gardens Subcommitee to address garden needs and programming around the gardens.

Farmer will work with other Farm staff and volunteers and may be asked to support some of the educational programs at the Farm.
