A unique cooking experience that gives participants the opportunity to learn authentic recipes and hear the stories from refugee cooks from the the Democratic Republic of the Congo — Neema and Chabusiku. Participants will observe the preparation of a traditional meal of Ugali (a starch dish made from corn- vegetarian), Lituma (a mashed plantain dish – vegetarian), Supu Nyama na Mboga (meat and greens stew), and Supu ya Ndizi (peanut stew with bananas and potato – vegetarian). You will get a chance to interact with the cooks, gain insight into the experiences of Congolese refugees and their way of life as new residents of New Haven, and enjoy the delicious meal together after the demonstration. All participants will receive copies of the recipes prepared.
All proceeds are used to compensate the cooks and support the cost of materials and kitchen space. You are welcome to offer a cash gratuity that will be given to the cooks at the end of the demo. There will be a box near the front door if you would like to support them in this way.
