Hartford Food System is seeking a part-time program assistant to assist with food procurement and sales.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Food Procurement & Sales Program Assistant is focused on the successful delivery of fresh, local foods to various retail channels within respective program areas. Most notably, this position will support the development of a seasonal Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) aggregation model aimed at procuring fresh produce from local farmers and urban growers. Shares of this CSA will be sold to Hartford residents to increase access to locally grown foods. The Program Assistant will primarily be responsible for identifying and developing direct to consumer sale opportunities through thoughtful community outreach and engagement. Additionally, this role will assist – alongside a team of staff and volunteers – with product receiving, order packaging, and distribution of orders at both pick-up and drop-off locations. The Program Assistant will also provide support to our Hartford Mobile Market with responsibilities including receiving product, ensuring the Mobile Market is adequately stocked for operations, and loading & unloading product and equipment at market locations. All activities will be supported by a combination of Program Director(s) and volunteers.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Identify sales and distribution opportunities while engaging Hartford residents as perspective customers of the CSA
  • Create materials and content – in partnership with Program Director – to promote products and services
  • Receive or Pick-up produce from local area urban farms
  • Assist in assessing produce quality before and during packing
  • Maintain and enforce standards for food handling safety and cleanliness
  • Assist volunteers and others in process of breaking down bulk produce orders into individual shares
  • Set-up and break down pick-up distribution locations
  • Assist customers with pick-up of individual shares, including processing payment, loading product into customers’ vehicle, and providing outstanding service
  • Transport product and/ or shares to drop-off locations in coordination with Program Director
  • Assist Hartford Mobile Market operations with product receiving, stocking, and transportation, delivery, and loading/ unloading of market product and equipment
  • Work with volunteers and interns as needed
  • Perform other related duties as required

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in retail, customer service, or sales and commitment to accuracy in financial transactions
  • Experience and comfort in using technology and social media to create promotional materials and content
  • Good interpersonal skills, team player, ability to interact with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Experience handling produce and assessing produce quality preferred
  • Experience driving a 10’ van in an urban setting preferred
  • Ability to set-up and break down distribution sites in all weather conditions
  • Ability to carry produce in cases and large bags weighing up to 50lbs
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including week days and select evenings or weekends, and to succeed within a rapidly-changing environment
  • Valid driver’s license and clean Motor Vehicle Record

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Position requires working outdoors for lengthy periods of time, sometimes in extreme temperatures or unpredictable weather, and in a potentially noisy environment
  • Ability to lift heavy equipment, supplies, and product – up to 50lbs
  • Ability to drive a 10’ van

Status: Part-Time, 15-20 hours/ week, $15/ hour
